Each dose comes in its own easy-to-use† pen, so you can continue to have the same experience with once-weekly Trulicity, regardless of the dose you’ve been prescribed.
*Read the Instructions for Use included with your pen.
†In a study, 94% of people who used the Trulicity Pen found it easy to use.
Managing side effects
Everyone’s experience is different, but there are some changes that you might notice when you take Trulicity. The most common side effects with Trulicity are:
- Abdominal pain
- Decreased appetite
Nausea happens most often when first starting Trulicity.
In studies, 8%-29% using Trulicity experienced some nausea, which typically occurred during the first 2-3 days after they took their first dose. Nausea generally subsided after the first 2 weeks, but some people experienced nausea with Trulicity beyond their second week of treatment. Less than 2% needed to stop taking Trulicity because of nausea.*
When you increase your dose of Trulicity, you might experience nausea. With the higher dose options, about 16% of people experienced nausea and about 1% of people needed to stop taking Trulicity because of it.
The most common adverse reactions experienced with Trulicity are nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, decreased appetite, indigestion and fatigue. The rates of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, while numerically higher in each of the higher dulaglutide groups compared with the 1.5 mg group were similar between between the dulaglutide 3.0 mg and 4.5 mg groups in a clinical trial.*
Talk with your healthcare provider about any side effects you experience.
If you experience nausea, talk to your doctor. In the meantime, you may find the following tips helpful.
- Eat smaller meals — try splitting your three daily meals into four or more smaller ones
- Stop eating when you feel full
- Avoid fried or fatty foods
- Try eating bland foods like toast, crackers, or rice
*In studies, GI side effects were more common in people taking Trulicity than people taking placebo, and people taking Trulicity were more likely to stop treatment because of these side effects. Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may cause a loss of fluids (dehydration), which could cause existing kidney problems to get worse (including kidney failure). Trulicity may cause severe stomach problems.
Additional information as you're getting started
Trulicity is designed to fit into your busy life.
Choosing your Trulicity day
Trulicity is taken just once a week. You can take Trulicity any time during this day, with or without meals. So, start by picking the best day for you and mark it as your Trulicity Day.
Do your best to stick to the same day every week.
If you'd like to change your Trulicity Day, you can. If it's been more than 3 days since your last dose, you can switch. If it's been fewer than 3 days since your last dose, wait until the following week to take the dose on your new Trulicity Day.
*Do not take 2 doses of Trulicity within 3 days of each other.
More dose options. More treatment possibilities.
Trulicity has 4 dose options to better fit your type 2 diabetes needs. And because each dose comes in the easy-to-use* pen, you can continue to have the same experience with once-weekly Trulicity, regardless of the dose you’ve been prescribed.
*In a study, 94% of people said it was easy to use.
Read the Instructions for Use included with your pen.
Choosing your injection site
Your doctor can help you choose the areas on your body that are best to use Trulicity. Be sure to use a different spot every time and do not overuse any one. Suggested places to use Trulicity are your upper arm, abdomen, or thigh (see diagram below).
How Trulicity can help
Starts acting from the first dose
Trulicity starts lowering your blood sugar from the first dose by helping your body release the insulin it’s still making.
Blood sugar levels
In studies, Trulicity has been proven to lower blood sugar levels. People taking Trulicity may notice better blood sugar numbers before eating in the morning (fasting blood sugar).
Trulicity may offer lasting A1C improvements. In a study, some Trulicity users saw a significant improvement when their A1C was measured after 6 months, and it was still improved after they had been taking Trulicity for 1 year.
Majority of people reached an A1C under 7%.
- Studies ranging between 24-36 weeks
- 59% to 60% for 0.75 mg Trulicity
- 50% to 68% for 1.5 mg Trulicity
- 56% for 3.0 mg Trulicity
- 62%for 4.5 mg Trulicity
If you have trouble meeting your A1C goal, talk with your doctor. You may need to adjust your medication, diet or exercise routine.
Trulicity is not a weight loss drug. Individual results may vary. People lost up to 10 lbs. While many people in clinical trials lost weight, some did gain weight.
In one study, many people lost some weight over the course of 6 months, and they were able to keep if off for the remainder of the study.
In clinical trials, weight change in adults ranges from +0.4 lbs (0.75 mg) to -10.1 lbs (4.5 mg).
Storing your pen
- Store your pen in the refrigerator, but do NOT freeze your pen.
- If you decide to travel with your Trulicity pens, you can keep them at room temperature (below 86°F, 30°C) for up to 14 days.
Dispose safely after use
Even though there’s no need to handle or see the needle in your Trulicity Pen, it’s important to safely dispose of your Trulicity Pens in a sharps container. If you don't have a sharps container, be sure to dispose the Trulicity pen in a puncture-resistant container with a closable lid -- like an empty plastic laundry detergent bottle, or a coffee can.
Keep container out of reach from children and pets.
Refer to regulations in your area for how to dispose of the container properly.
